June, 2017 - Michael Zens Chosen as New LSB Music Director

Lakeshore Symphonic Band is pleased to announce that Mr. Michael Zens has been chosen as its new music director.

Currently a music teacher in the Franklin Public School District, Mr. Zens also conducts the Youth Wind Orchestra of Wisconsin. Prior to his position in Franklin, he was Director of Bands and Orchestra, as well as Music Curriculum Chair, for the Menomonee Falls School District for eight years. Mr. Zens holds a Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. A more detailed bio is below.

The choice of our new music director is the culmination of a 20-month search. We are looking forward to making music with Mr. Zens, and we hope to see you at our first concert of the next season, Saturday, October 21st at the Cedarburg Performing Arts Center, 7:30 P.M.!


Michael Zens, guest conductorMichael Zens is a musician and conductor with a diverse background. He has served the young people of southeastern Wisconsin as a music educator since 2004.

Since 2008, Mr. Zens has been on the music faculty of the Youth Wind Orchestra of Wisconsin, an honors youth wind ensemble located at Carroll University. This ensemble draws its membership from throughout Milwaukee, Waukesha, Washington, and Ozaukee Counties.

From 2006-2015, Mr. Zens was the Director of Bands at Menomonee Falls High School, where he conducted the Wind Symphony and Concert Band, directed the Jazz Big Band, and oversaw all aspects of the band program. During his time at MFHS, the program enjoyed a tremendous record of success.

The MFHS Wind Symphony was invited to present concerts at the 2007 and 2010 Wisconsin State Music Conventions, and ensembles under Mr. Zens’s direction shared performances with the Wisconsin Brass Quintet and the UW-Madison Wind Ensemble. The program also was involved in commissioning new music for wind ensemble, and participated in projects with composers including James Mobberley, Robert Dusek, and John Mackey. Alumni of the program during his tenure as director have gone on to perform with ensembles such as the National Symphony Orchestra, the New World Symphony, the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, the Curtis Orchestra, the Aspen Music Festival Orchestra, and the University of Wisconsin Wind Ensemble.

Mr. Zens earned a Bachelor of Music Education Degree from the University of Wisconsin- Madison and attended graduate School at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

A strong believer in the importance of beginning band experiences, Mr. Zens now serves the children of Franklin as fifth and sixth grade band director at Pleasant View and Country Dale Schools.
