Greta Schwartz, 2017 Young Artist Winner

Greta Schwartz, Clarinet, 2017 Young Artist winner In the summer of 2009, Greta’s musical journey began as clarinet lessons with Mrs. Dawn Sisley. As a student at Saint Paul Lutheran School, Greta started in the fifth grade Beginning Band and continued in Concert Band and Jazz Band her sixth through eighth grade years. In eighth grade, she was clarinet section leader for Concert Band and was honored with the Music Director Award.

In 2010, Greta joined the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra (MYSO) in the Junior Wind Ensemble under the direction of Mr. Thomas Dvorak, Professor Emeritus/retired Dir. of Bands at the UW-Milwaukee, assisted by Mr. Nicholas Carlson, Asst. Dir. of Bands at the University of Illinois-Chicago.

During middle school summers, Greta was involved in the Grafton High School Band Summer Camps under the direction of Mr. Brett Dimmer, where she learned to play the trumpet, alto saxophone, and flute. Greta also enjoyed the challenge of participating in the WSMA Solo and Ensemble Festival throughout junior high school.

Since the summer of 2012, Greta has continued her private clarinet instruction studying under Mrs. Mary Burczyk. Greta attended the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee Honors Band Festival in the fall of 2012 and was appointed as Concert Mistress for the North Dakota Band under the direction of Mrs. Aleshire, associate band director at the University of North Dakota. She also earned a seat in the WSMA State Honors Orchestra the next year.

As a Grafton High School student, Greta has been in the Concert Band, under the direction of Mr. Brett Dimmer for two years and Mrs. Kathryn Hardt for two more, serving as section leader for three years. She participated in her high school musicals as a pit orchestra musician for four different shows and for one show in the pit at John Long Middle School. Greta participated in WSMA Solo and Ensemble Festivals all four years of high school, qualifying for the State Festival every time since 2014 as a soloist and ensemble musician. In 2016, she was named Exemplary Soloist for her site at the State Festival. Greta accepted the invitation to the WSMA State Honors Band in 2014 and 2016. She was selected as an alternate in 2015.

Greta auditioned and was chosen to play in MYSO Philharmonia in 2015 under the direction of Mr. Dan Duffy, Director of Bands at Waukesha West High School. In the summer of 2015, she attended the University of Wisconsin Whitewater Summer Band Camp under the direction of Mr. Glenn Hayes. The following summer, she chose to attend the University of Wisconsin Madison Summer Music Clinic. Greta became a member of the MYSO Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra in 2016 under the direction of Mr. Carter Simmons, Artistic Director of MYSO.

Greta has performed for countless events in the Grafton community, at her church, and continually enjoys such opportunities.
